White surfaces are attractive for sawflies!
Sawflies are highly attracted by white surfaces, that do not reflect ultraviolet light. These white surfaces are considered as «super blossoms». White traps were also shown to be highly attractive for the raspberry beetle.
Identification of trapped insects
Different insects can be caught with these white traps. Aside from sawflies and raspberry beetles, flies and mosquitos are also attracted, but only few bees. Sawflies can be easily identified. They have 2 pairs of membranous wings, a compact and shiny body, and in comparison with other wasps, bees and ants no constriction at the base of the abdomen. Raspberry beetles are elongate-oval in shape and around 45 mm long. The finely hairy beetles are at the start of flight light brown, later dark brown to black. Other beetles of similar size and form will hardly be caught.
Monitoring the flight of sawflies
Two elements are inserted into each other and attached with a piece of wire to a horizontal branch.
Timing: one week before the beginning of blooming to one week after the end.
Positioning: within the orchard, at the outer edge of the tree top (if possible on the south side), at face level.
Number of traps: at least 23 traps per variety (3050 m apart), on 24 different, susceptible varieties.
Controls: at least once a week.
Monitoring the flight of raspberry beetles
Monitoring of flight Installation and control of traps Two elements are inserted into each other and
attached with a piece of wire to a horizontal training wire.
Timing: mid April to harvest begin.
Positioning: within the patch, first at a height of 0.51.0 m, later between 1.01.5 m.
Number of traps: a minimum of 2 traps per variety.
Controls: at least once a week.
Trap Maintenance
Due to their robust nature the traps can be reused for several years, after removal of glue and insects with petrol. Fresh glue can be purchased separately from VIT.
Attention: On Rebell traps TANGLE-TRAP® glue is used which is non-toxic and accepted to be used in organic farming by FiBL and OMRI. Similar commercially available glues may contain chemicals which might harm plants, leave residue and shorten the lifetime of Rebell traps.
