Thymovar® Organic Bee Product
Organic War against Varroa
Thymovar® contains thymol. Through volatilisation, thymol vapour concentrations build up in the hive. These are highly toxic to the varroa mites, but do not harm the bees.
Dosage and placement
Apply at temperatures between 12°C and 30°C (maximum day temperatures).
Treatment
Maximum day temperatures should not be lower than 12 °C and not higher than 30 °C. Best efficiency is achieved at 20 – 25 °C. The first treatment should be directly after the last honey harvest, only when nectar flow has ceased. Use 1/2 – 2 wafers laid on the top frame close to the brood. After 3 – 4 weeks the wafers have to be removed. Second treatment, again use 1/2 – 2 new wafers laid close to the brood and remove it after 3 – 4 weeks. The floor of the beehive must be closed. To avoid robbery, all colonies in the same bee yard should be treated with THYMOVAR® at the same time.
Residues in Honey and Wax
The thymol taste threshold in honey is between 1.1 and 1.6 mg per kg flower honey. This limit could only be exceeded if THYMOVAR® is applied during the nectar flow.
Remarks
Under unfavourable conditions (low temperatures), the success rate may deteriorate. Treatment efficiency monitoring is therefore important. The winter-treatment can only be omitted if 14 days after the THYMOVAR® treatment, less than one mite per day falls. Uncontrolled colonies or colonies with a higher rate of mite fall must be given a winter-treatment.
